Diffusion-based Soil Respiration Chamber Measurements

ثبت نشده
چکیده

This application note contains general information about soil respiration and discusses some issues worth considering while conducting measurements with soil respiration chambers. Some basic hints and guidelines on how to use a GMP343 in a soilrespiration chamber for CO2 flux measurements in the surface-atmosphere boundary layer are also given. The primary mechanism for transport of CO2 from the soil to the atmosphere is diffusion, thus measuring the CO2 flux with the aid of a soil respiration chamber and an infrared-based CARBOCAP diffusion sampling CO2 probe eliminates complex pump sampling systems. Also a reference list of some scientific publications on chamber-based measurements of soil respiration is given.

Calibration and optimization of a low cost diffusion chamber for passive separated measurements of radon and thoron in soil by Lexan PC SSNTD

Background: Separate radon and thoron measurements in soil are very important in assessment of internal exposure due to inhalation of such radioactive gases. Materials and Methods: In this study, a low cost, small size, passive diffusion chamber has been developed for simple measurement of Radon-222 and Radon-220(Thoron) gases separately in soil. The diffusion chamber consists of two films and ...

Measuring and modelling the isotopic composition of soil respiration: insights from a grassland tracer experiment

The carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) of CO2 efflux (δCefflux) from soil is generally interpreted to represent the actual isotopic composition of the respiratory source (δCRs). However, soils contain a large CO2 pool in airfilled pores. This pool receives CO2 from belowground respiration and exchanges CO2 with the atmosphere (via diffusion and advection) and the soil liquid phase (via dissolut...

Automated Monitoring of Soil Respiration: an Improved Automatic Chamber System

We designed, constructed and tested an automated chamber system for continuously monitoring soil respiration. Our objective was to design a system that would permit monitoring of CO2 efflux rates over long time periods without altering microclimate inside the chamber. The measuring principle is based on the measurement of the increase in CO2 concentration within an automated chamber in a fixed ...

Comparative Measurements of Radon Concentration in Soil Using Passive and Active Methods in High Level Natural Radiation Area (HLNRA) of Ramsar

Background: Radon and its daughters are amongst the most important sources of natural exposure in the world. Soil is one of the significant sources of radon/thoron due to both radium and thorium so that the emanated thoron from it may cause increased uncertainties in radon measurements. Recently, a diffusion chamber has been designed and optimized for passive discriminative measurements of rado...

Importance of nondiffusive transport for soil CO2 efflux in a temperate mountain grassland

Soil respiration and its biotic and abiotic drivers have been an important research topic in recent years. While the bulk of these efforts has focused on the emission of CO2 from soils, the production and subsequent transport of CO2 from soil to atmosphere received far less attention. However, to understand processes underlying emissions of CO2 from terrestrial ecosystems, both processes need t...
